Plastic Is Everywhere – Why Hotels and Restaurants Must Care
Plastic is now woven into the fabric of modern life, but the scale is staggering. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, and nearly half of that is designed for single use. Much of this material, used for a few minutes of convenience, can take hundreds of years to decompose. A significant portion ends up in landfills, rivers and eventually the oceans, where it continues to impact ecosystems quietly and relentlessly.
Hospitality is a high-volume industry. We serve thousands of guests, move thousands of units, and make thousands of micro-decisions about packaging, amenities and service styles. Every plastic spoon, cling film roll, amenity bottle, glove or bottle is part of a larger global story. If we ignore this story, we become silent contributors to a problem that will outlive us. If we engage with it, we become part of the solution—using our scale and visibility to inspire change.
For hotels and restaurants, caring about plastic is not just about environmental ethics; it is also about smart business and brand positioning. Guests are increasingly aware of sustainability metrics and prefer brands that respect both people and planet. Regulators, investors and corporate leaders are also watching environmental performance more closely. When we take concrete steps to reduce single-use plastics, we protect oceans and wildlife, but we also strengthen our reputation, meet evolving ESG expectations and align with the future direction of the global economy.
